Lapidary medicine, or the therapeutic applications of ‘stones’, arose from ancient pharmacology, flourished throughout the Middle Ages, and became a staple of early modern apothecary shops. This talk explores the popular use of mineral pharmacology and its place in the medical marketplace of medieval and early modern England.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Nichola Harris (the State University of New York) received her Ph.D. at Rutgers and currently leads Medica: the Society for the Study of Healing in the Middle Ages. Her research focuses on the practice of lapidary medicine and mineral pharmacology in pre-modern Europe.
