This lecture is the second in a series of lectures related to the Experiences in Femininity exhibit.
In this lecture, Ang R. Bennett, interdisciplinary artist, curator, actor, athlete, and queer activist, leans into the idea of gender not simply as a social construct, but as an ongoing performance—something we rehearse, embody, and sometimes improvise. As a transmasculine artist, Bennett's work navigates the choreography of masculinity: how it's signaled, interpreted, and internalized. Through their interdisciplinary practice, they use visual language to examine the roles we’re handed and the ones we write for ourselves. They are interested in what happens when the performance breaks—when the mask slips, the lines change, or the audience doesn’t respond as expected. By treating gender as an act of becoming rather than a state of being, Bennett invites viewers to consider how art can expose, challenge, and liberate us from the socially constructed scripts we've been taught to follow.
