This lecture is the third and final in a series of lectures related to the Experiences in Femininity exhibit.
As culture shifts and norms change the presence of feminism has peaks and troughs. In this talk Dr. Medici-Thiemann will discuss where we encounter feminism in our culture, how feminist influence has shaped a variety of aspects of popular culture, and why it matters. She will address the controversy surrounding feminism and discuss what happens when feminism appears in popular culture including in romance novels, historical representations, and discussions of medicine and health.
Catherine Medici-Thiemann is a historian and feminist scholar. She has been teaching women’s and gender studies and medical humanities since 2012 and her current research focuses on women, gender, medicine, and chronic illness. Her research on women’s networks and political involvement as well as network analysis has appeared in Early Modern Women Journal, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, multiple edited collections, and she is a contributing author for the website Nursing Clio. Catherine received her PhD in history and women’s and gender studies from the University of Nebraska Lincoln. She is currently Coordinator of Outreach, Access, and Resources at University of Nebraska Medical Center and adjunct professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at University of Nebraska Lincoln.
