DESCRIPTION:The focus of the seminar series is to call for experts related
to academia and research in the areas related to biomechanics\, variability
\, motor disorders\, physical therapy\, and related studies. The series inc
ludes local and nationally renowned professors and specialists presenting f
indings\, stimulating thinking\, and creating collaboration ideas for the U
 NO students and faculty.\n\n \n\nPresentation Abstract: \n\n"Exercise As A
Rehabilitation Adjuvant - Novel Approaches to Promote Post-stroke Recovery"
\n\nExercise training interventions have long showed promise for improving
health and enhancing functional performance. In recent years\, acute exerc
ise has shown the ability to transiently influence the potential for neurop
lastic adaptations\, potentially offering a window of opportunity for enhan
cing intervention effectiveness. This goal of this presentation is to shar
e findings from studies utilizing exercise as a primer to other therapeutic
approaches in an effort to enhance their effects on common post-stroke imp
airments.\n\n \n\nAbout Dr. Gregory:\n\nChris Gregory is an Associate Profe
ssor in the Department of Health Sciences & Research at MUSC as well as a R
esearch Health Scientist at the Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center in Charle
ston\, SC. With a primary focus on intervention studies\, work to date tar
gets the optimization of therapeutic strategies to reduce disability and im
prove quality of life in individuals following stroke. Ongoing studies uti
lize a variety of methodologies\, including clinical assessments\, electrop
hysiological testing\, biomechanical analyses and magnetic resonance techni
ques to identify mechanisms (physiological and behavioral) underlying funct
 ional limitations/improvements.
