The Service Learning Academy annual seminar is a 4.5-day interactive workshop that brings together teams of P-12 educators, UNO faculty members, after-school facilitators, and community partners. The goal is to develop collaborative service-learning courses to implement within the next 18 months.

Service Learning:

  • Is an experiential, collaborative method of teaching that connects academic learning to community-identified service opportunities.
  • Is a high-impact teaching practice that provides real-world application of classroom curriculum.
  • Intentionally connects learning outcomes with community-identified service opportunities.
  • Promotes workforce skills such as communication, leadership, problem-solving, and critical thinking while utilizing asset-based community engagement.

Participants receive a modest stipend for attending. UNO faculty get $400 in professional development funds and P-12 educators get $400.

In addition to a modest stipend or professional development fund for attending the Seminar, P-12 teachers and UNO faculty members receive support for co-created service learning experiences that include graduate assistant support, transportation, project materials, food, and other project expenses as approved when connected to a UNO course.

Seminar Highlights:

  • Breakfast and lunch are provided daily
  • Site visits to local community organizations
  • Interactive format throughout this Seminar
  • Leave with a well-developed service learning project
