Criss Library

What Lies in the Shadows is a convergence of two artists' work, Alex Renbarger and Maddie Hinrichs. Both construct domestic interiors that balance familiarity with ambiguity, using deep phthalo blues, burnt burgundies, and ultramarine purples as near-blacks that carry the eye through the exhibition. Renbarger builds unreal spaces from Photoshopped collages using AI-generated imagery as foundations for her oil paintings. Without the limiting specifics of a pre-existing space, the imagery can be led by feeling, allowing something impossible to take on the atmosphere of memory and feel remembered without ever having existed. Hinrichs achieves a similar feeling from a different direction, instead projecting images of real spaces into lived interiors, capturing and reworking those intersections through embroidery and paint, forcing disparate perspectives together. Her work overlaps and collides images of the real until they begin to lose focus. Together, the work uses shadows to come to terms with the limits of what can be understood and what only needs to be accepted. Not everything needs to be brought into the light to change the way we understand what is in front of us.

About the Artists

Alex Renbarger and Maddie Hinrichs are Lincoln, Nebraska-based visual artists whose work uses domestic space and color to explore emotional and psychological complexities. Hinrichs received her MFA from the University at Albany and has exhibited nationally, with work featured in New American Paintings, The Woven Tale Press, and other publications. Renbarger received her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, exhibits regionally and nationally, and focuses much of her professional practice on teaching painting, drawing, color theory, and professional practice. Community is central to both artists, especially through their work at LUX Center for the Arts in Lincoln.

Spoopy Jam is back for another year of Halloween-flavored game-dev action alongside UNO's Creative Production Lab, the Maverick Meadow Indie Game Studio, and Omaha Game Developer's Association.

It's nothing but treats when it comes to the tricks of accessibility success: the online portion of the jam and theme are live and open for the entire month of October. That's right, Mavs: YOU HAVE A FULL MONTH TO WORK AT YOUR OWN PACE.

What is a game jam? As soon as the theme is announced October 1st on itch.io, you have until the Halloween deadline to design and create any kind of game you want. This a great way to see if game design is your thing in a low-stakes environment, or test your existing development skills. Support and guidance will be available for newcomers on coming up with ideas, and doing basic interactive development in analog or digital format.

We welcome first time game developers: Designers, artists, musicians, programmers, voice actors, hobbyists, educators, anyone and everyone is welcome to try their hand at making a game. If video games aren't your preference or access to hardware is an issue, you're encouraged to test the waters by making a board game or hopping in to act as a tester for other teams making a game.

🎃 New for 2026: Technology Prep Party - Saturday October 17 🎃

Come to the Criss Library (room 249) -- Organizers will be hosting a Prep Party, where newcomers and seasoned vets take a little time to get prepared, together. This hands-on mini workshop will cover the basics of rapid iteration for game development, tools for game dev, and a bit of team-building.

🎃 Development Sprint - Saturday October 24 & Sunday October 25 🎃

The last full Saturday and Sunday weekend of October we're in-person at the Peter Kiewit Institute (room 158) for a dedicated weekend development sprint. That's a solid weekend together to either start and finish your bogus masterpiece, or 48 hours of just hanging out and showcasing the fine work you've completed during spoopy season.

Anyone can participate online. In-person participants must be at least 19 years of age or a current NU System student.

Organizers and fellow developers will be available through discord and at the in-person event to answer questions and assist with completion of your game. You are not alone!

🎃 Development Sprint - Saturday October 24 & Sunday October 25 🎃

The last full Saturday and Sunday weekend of October we're in-person at the Peter Kiewit Institute (room 158) for a dedicated weekend development sprint.

Criss Library

Join Andrew Rodionov for a presentation on his recent translation of Momento: Galilean Studies, by Paolo Galluzzi, from Italian. This first translation is now available through Springer Nature. Momento: Galilean Studies is a rigorous and comprehensive documentation of Galileo Galilei's scientific work in overcoming limitations of traditional theories of motion and weight. Andrew will discuss the challenges and triumphs he encountered as a first-time translator undertaking the daunting task of approaching such niche subject matter, which itself already involved a great deal of translation from the original Latin. He will also discuss how, as a community user, he made use of Criss Library's collections to complete his work.

Criss Library

Hosted by the UNO Criss Library Archives and Special Collections department in collaboration with the UNO Department of History, this workshop will provide an introduction to transcription and offer opportunities for participants to transcribe archival materials. By using items from the Shirley and Leonard Goldstein Papers, the session will introduce participants to the ways in which everyday documents—letters, petitions, and civic records—offer insight into the political, social, and economic context of World War II and later. Brief demonstrations and commentary from facilitators will frame transcription as both a scholarly skill and a means of civic engagement, inviting discussion about the accessibility of historical records, the preservation of marginalized voices, and the role of public participation in constructing historical memory.

Participants will transcribe materials from the UNO Criss Library Archives and Special Collections Shirley and Leonard Goldstein Papers. Shirley and Leonard were married during World War II and the collection holds their extensive correspondence. These correspondences are mainly letters Leonard sent to Shirley when he was in training and while stationed overseas. Other important materials include Shirley and Leonard Goldstein’s work as activists on behalf of Jewish people of the Soviet Union, known as Refuseniks.

The event space has desktop computers, so participants are welcome to use them or bring their own devices. Light refreshments will be provided. Register for this event.

This is Transcribe-athon is part of the UNO Criss Library Archives and Special Collections programming for American Archives Month, celebrated in October in the United States.

Criss Library

Writes of Passage is an open mic event that takes place every third Thursday of the month. This isn’t just another open mic night—it’s a celebration of storytelling and raw emotion, where voices from all walks of life take center stage.
