In April 2023, five students from the UNO Grace Abbott School of Social Work traveled to New York City to attend Social Work Day at the United Nations. Capturing life through the lens of social work, their compelling photographs document contrasts between the vibrant urban landscape and the challenges faced by marginalized communities.

Dr. Ken Rutherford co-founded the Survivor Corps, formerly the Landmine Survivors Network, created by and for survivors to help victims of war, and is a recognized leader of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, which was the recipient of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. He accompanied Princess Diana on her last humanitarian mission to visit landmine survivors and people with disabilities in Bosnia in August 1997, only three weeks before her death. He has conducted work in more than 40 countries, including: Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq, Rwanda, Tajikistan, Vietnam, and Yemen. Rutherford has published five books, including most recently, America’s Buried History: Landmines in the Civil War. Action on Armed Violence has included Rutherford among the ‘one-hundred most influential people in armed violence reduction,’ and he is the recipient of several awards, including: The Leadership in International Rehabilitation Award, The Humanitarian Award-presented by Sir Paul McCartney, and The Human Security Person of the Year Award. He holds a Ph.D. in Government from Georgetown University, and a B.A. and MBA from the University of Colorado.

Presentation Title: From Experimentation to Infrastructure: How Universities Should Rebuild Research, Teaching, and Academic Culture in the Age of AI

Presentation Abstract:

This seminar offers an institution-level case discussion of how a university can navigate the rapid transition catalyzed by contemporary artificial intelligence, including generative systems and other automated reasoning tools. The talk synthesizes lessons from building AI-integrated programs, coordinating faculty and staff upskilling, and developing governance practices that address privacy, academic integrity, equity, and long-term sustainability. Rather than treating AI adoption as a set of isolated classroom experiments, the presentation frames the transition as a coordinated change-management problem spanning research workflows, curriculum architecture, assessment norms, and the culture of scholarly collaboration. The seminar also addresses tensions now appearing across campuses: uneven tool access, disciplinary differences in evidentiary standards, uncertainty around intellectual property, and the need to train students for hybrid human–AI work without eroding foundational literacies. The session concludes with a pragmatic framework for departments seeking to move from reactive experimentation to intentional strategy, emphasizing governance, faculty development, and research-centered evaluation of impact.

About the speaker:

James Hutson, PhD, PhD is a multidisciplinary scholar and academic leader specializing in artificial intelligence, higher education strategy, and interdisciplinary research transformation. He holds a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, alongside advanced training in the humanities, and serves as Department Head of Art History, AI, and Visual Culture at Lindenwood University, where he leads institution-wide initiatives integrating AI across research, teaching, and academic governance. His work focuses on how generative and decision-support systems reshape scholarly workflows, curriculum design, faculty development, and institutional policy, with particular attention to ethical deployment, transparency, and long-term sustainability. Hutson is the author and editor of multiple books and peer-reviewed publications on artificial intelligence in education, research, and culture, and he regularly advises universities, public agencies, and industry partners on navigating the organizational and cultural transitions associated with AI adoption.

Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center is a space where art is the gateway to a conversation on human rights, Holocaust education, and genocide. Justice and Hope presents the Spring 2026 exhibition and explores how artists Samuel Bak, Dinh Q. Lê, Mladen Miljanović, Serge Nitegeka, and Maja Ruznic use intertwining personal narrative and historical facts to commemorate conflicts and denounce humanity’s inability to forgo violence. The exhibition poses questions on reconciliation and how we might learn from history to build better futures.

This paper investigates the volatility dynamics and risk spillover effects among stablecoins, foreign exchange markets, and bond markets, with a particular focus on emerging and developing economies. While existing research has primarily examined the interdependence of major cryptocurrencies with advanced financial markets, little is known about the systemic linkages involving stablecoins and their interactions with key financial markets in less-developed regions. To address this gap, we employ multivariate GARCH-in-mean models to capture the time-varying relationship between volatility and returns, and to identify channels of shock and volatility transmission. Specifically, we analyze whether stablecoins serve as conduits of financial risk or as hedging instruments in markets characterized by weaker institutional frameworks, higher exchange rate volatility, and more fragile debt markets. Our findings are expected to provide new evidence on the extent to which stablecoin shocks propagate into foreign exchange and bond markets, shaping financial stability in emerging and developing countries. By highlighting the role of stablecoins in global financial linkages, this study contributes to the literature on cryptocurrency–traditional market interactions and offers policy-relevant insights for regulators seeking to manage systemic risks in vulnerable economies.

Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center is a space where art is the gateway to a conversation on human rights, Holocaust education, and genocide. Justice and Hope presents the Spring 2026 exhibition and explores how artists Samuel Bak, Dinh Q. Lê, Mladen Miljanović, Serge Nitegeka, and Maja Ruznic use intertwining personal narrative and historical facts to commemorate conflicts and denounce humanity’s inability to forgo violence. The exhibition poses questions on reconciliation and how we might learn from history to build better futures.

The Social Science Methods and Methodology Community of Practice (SSMM-CoP) is organizing a one-day qualitative data analysis work session on Tuesday, March 24 from 9am-3pm. Researchers (faculty, staff, and graduate students) can bring qualitative data, proposals, manuscripts or other work in progress to work on alongside other researchers at UNO. Many social science researchers who engage with qualitative data often benefit from a shared space to write, analyze, and discuss their work. If you are in this position, this opportunity is for you. Feel free to drop in for part of the time or join us for the day!

Bosnia: Who Remembers? Who Denies?

This talk explores what it means to commemorate genocide in a society still divided, asking who is allowed to shape collective memory versus challenge it. By focusing on post-1996 Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr. Lana Obradovic will address who remembers, who resists those memories, and why places like Srebrenica remain central and contested in public history. Art from Trauma: Lessons from Listening to Genocide Survivors in Rwanda

Dr. Herndon will present on the work of memory and the transformative power of language and story to confront trauma and its haunting ability to shape minds and lives across generations. She will share her work of listening to Rwandan genocide survivors and how even in Nebraska we are connected to them. Sophia Ollis is a Music Education major with a concentration in Voice for PK–12. She currently studies under Dr. Jennifer Townsley, Voice Area Coordinator, and has also trained with Mr. Joel Johnston, and Mrs. Sharon North Jones. Through these experiences, she has developed a strong foundation in classical vocal technique, musicianship, and expressive performance, while cultivating a deep passion for music education and community engagement.

During her time at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Sophia has performed in numerous Voice Area Recitals and choral concerts as both a member and section leader of UNO’s Concert Choir. Her stage credits include Into the Woods, UNO’s 2025 opera The Miller’s Daughter, and she is set to perform in this year’s production of Die Zauberflöte. She has also performed at Gallery 1516, participated in a masterclass at UNO with Shout House’s Hannah Zazzario, and appeared at West Central NATS Competition in 2024 and 2025, making semifinals in the Musical Theatre Category in 2025. In addition, she has been featured in UNO’s Sound Health series, an outreach initiative that brings live music to medical centers in the community.

Beyond performance, Sophia is deeply involved in leadership and service. She works as a section leader at Dundee Presbyterian Church and teaches piano and voice at Elkhorn Music Lessons. She currently serves as Treasurer of UNO NAfME and is a founding member of UNO’s a cappella ensemble, the Pitch Slappers.

An associate professor of English at Mount Marty University in Yankton, South Dakota, Reese spent fourteen years in residency for the National Endowment for the Arts’ interagency initiative with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, where he established Yankton Federal Prison Camp’s first creative writing and publishing workshop. He is the author of eight books of poetry and nonfiction, and speaks throughout the country on the repercussions of crime, the benefits of writing for wellness in a correctional environment and connecting with people in marginal, non-traditional spaces.

The grant project Access to the Archives of the Great Plains Black History Museum is arranging and describing the Museum’s 115 cubic foot archival collection, which includes documents, photographs, records of the museum, and other material dating from 1870 to 2015 that shares the history of the Black community in Omaha, Nebraska, and more broadly in the Great Plains. The archival material was gathered by the Museum’s founder Mrs. Bertha Calloway and subsequent Museum staff and volunteers.

In 2026, the Museum marks 50 years since it was established by Bertha Calloway while Criss Library is celebrating 50 years since the building was dedicated. As we look towards the 250th anniversary of the United States’ independence, exhibits and events in Criss Library’s Archives and Special Collections will explore the many facets of American history that are revolutionary.

The open house is part of Access to the Archives of the Great Plains Black History Museum, a joint grant project of the Great Plains Black History Museum and Criss Library supported by the National Archives' National Historical Publications and Records Commission.

Gaylene Armstrong, Ph.D., Dean, Isaacson Professor, College of Public Affairs and Community Service

A leader in her field, Dr. Armstrong has directed the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice since 2016, guiding it to new levels of excellence. She also serves as co-director of the Nebraska Collaborative for Violence Intervention and Prevention and, since 2023, as UNO’s Faculty Athletic Representative to the NCAA. Kyle Bergler (percussion) is a student of Dr. Hannah Weaver at the University of Nebraska - Omaha. As a performer, they have played with a wide variety of ensembles, such as the BGSU Wind Symphony, Percussion Ensemble, Samba Bateria, and Steel Band, the Toledo Choral Society, The UNO Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and New Music Ensemble, and various ensembles at the Edeta Arts Festival in Spain. Recently they competed in the PASIC Percussion Ensemble Competition, performing Aurel Hollo’s José / before John 5. As an avid composer, they seek to blend elaborate rhythms and organic, evolving textures, to create moving, oftentimes hypnotic, works. Their music is often inspired by and based around scientific phenomena, usually in the realms of astronomy, geology, and zoology, tying them in thematically with reflections on the human experience. Kyle has had their works premiered across the United States, with notable performances such as the EDME New Music Festival in Eugene, OR, and the Total Solar Eclipse Watch Party in Bowling Green, OH. Kyle received their bachelor’s degree in music composition from Bowling Green State University in 2025.

Hosted in collaboration with UNO Criss Library Archives and Special Collections, this workshop will explore how contemporary Americans encounter and interpret the founding era through the practice of archival transcription. Drawing on materials highlighted by the Library of Congress’s Women of the Early Republic “By the People” campaign, the session will introduce participants to the ways in which everyday documents—letters, petitions, and civic records—offer insight into the political ideals and social conflicts that shaped the nation’s founding. Brief demonstrations and commentary from facilitators will frame transcription as both a scholarly skill and a means of civic engagement, inviting discussion about the accessibility of historical records, the preservation of marginalized voices, and the role of public participation in constructing historical memory. Participants will transcribe the surviving papers of Anne “Nancy” Home Shippen Livingston, Rebecca Lloyd Nicholson, Margaret Bayard Smith, and Anna Maria Brodeau Thornton. These papers offer a window into the new political landscape caused by the American Revolution, though women’s lives remained circumscribed by the prevailing social order.

This screening will feature clips from popular depictions of the American Revolution in culture, including the musicals Hamilton and 1776, as well as the HBO miniseries John Adams. The clips will be interspersed with panel commentary between Historian Dr. Susan Brynne Long and Film Studies Director Dr. John Lyden, Professor of Religious Studies, who edits the Journal of Religion and Film. They will consider the historical accuracies and inaccuracies of these representations, as well as the ways in which they reflect modern values and a society's evaluation of its own history. Media re-imaginings of history tell us as much about the times in which they were made as the times they depict, and in this light, the discussion will ask questions such as: What is the utility of putting history on screen? What can we learn about ourselves and our history by evaluating these representations? And what is the role of popular media in promoting civic engagement? A key learning outcome for participants will be enhanced historical and popular cultural literacy.

Indigenous peoples have always understood fire as a living relationship rather than an agent of destruction; it is part of a broader system of reciprocity in which humans have obligations to maintain balance. We have also understood fire as governance. By using low intensity fire stewardship across diverse landscapes, Indigenous Peoples have long shaped environments to support food systems, biodiversity, and cultural materials. These practices are guided by generations of observation and knowledge passed through story, ceremony, and practices that are adaptive, place-based science.

Presentation Title: The Stuff Between Cortex and Muscles

Presentation Abstract:

The mechanical complexities of vertebrate musculoskeletal systems have been extensively modeled. How those complexities are addressed by the many subsystems of the vertebrate nervous system remains unclear. Those subsystems emerged at different points of phylogenetic evolution and they develop at different times during individual ontogeny; nevertheless, they must all work together in the adult. Any attempt to interpret anatomical or physiological data from any of them involves implicit assumptions about the role of the others – a theory of computation. By studying very fast tasks like catching an unpredictable object, we have identified that subcortical systems are performing computations normally ascribed to cerebral cortex. By modeling the fetal self-organization of subcortical circuits, we have obtained insights into how that capability arises.

About the speaker:

Gerald Loeb is Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Medical Device Development Facility at the University of Southern California.

He received B.A. and M.D. degrees from Johns Hopkins University and surgical training at the University of Arizona. From 1973 to 1988, he was an intramural research scientist and Chief of the Section on Neurokinesiology in the Laboratory of Neural Control at the National Institutes of Health. He was Professor of Physiology and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Unit at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada, until 1999.

Dr. Loeb’s research has alternated between basic research in musculoskeletal mechanics and sensorimotor control and applied research on implantable electronic devices, particularly neural prostheses. He has published over 400 articles (most available at http://mddf.usc.edu) and is an inventor on over 75 issued US patents. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, served as Chief Scientist to Advanced Bionics Corp. and was a founding director of SynTouch Inc., designated a Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum.

We examine two key dimensions related to the impact of migration flows on crime rates. Previous literature has indicated a weak relationship between migration and crime. Empirical evidence often suggests that migration does not exacerbate crime rates and may even reduce certain types of criminal activity. In this paper, we argue that a more nuanced understanding of these effects requires a decomposition of migration flows. Specifically, we distinguish between return migrants and those relocating to new destinations. We highlight that migrants from regions experiencing adverse economic shocks may have distinct impacts on crime rates. Firstly, we investigate whether migration from areas affected by adverse economic shocks has a discernible effect on crime rates. Secondly, we explore whether this effect varies depending on whether individuals are returning to their birthplaces ("returning migrants") or moving to a new one ("migrants"). Our results suggest that returning migrants lower crime rates whereas the effect of migrants on crime is contingent on the extent to which their displacements were triggered by adverse economic shocks.

Samuel Bak Museum: The Learning Center is a space where art is the gateway to a conversation on human rights, Holocaust education, and genocide. Justice and Hope presents the Spring 2026 exhibition and explores how artists Samuel Bak, Dinh Q. Lê, Mladen Miljanović, Serge Nitegeka, and Maja Ruznic use intertwining personal narrative and historical facts to commemorate conflicts and denounce humanity’s inability to forgo violence. The exhibition poses questions on reconciliation and how we might learn from history to build better futures.

Presentation Title: Assembling and Disassembling Solids using Collective Action

Presentation Abstract:

Swarm robotics is a promising methodology for accomplishing complicated tasks through the collective behavior of multiple active units. Interactions between active individuals in animal collectives (like fire ants and worms) lead to emergent responses that remain elusive in synthetic systems. In this talk, I present shape-morphing polymers as a framework to create bio-inspired transient swarms that can self-assemble into a stable solid structure, modulate their mechanical properties, and disassemble on demand. The solids are composed of aggregates of many magnetic, heat-responsive liquid crystal elastomer ribbons. Dilute-suspensions of curved and moving ribbons mechanically interlock, inducing reversible aggregation. The degree of bend and twist of the ribbon and the motion of the ribbon in a rotating external field control how ribbons interact with one another. A mathematical model is developed that sheds light on the role of topological mechanisms in aggregation. The ribbon suspensions reversibly transition between fluid- and solid-like states, exhibiting up to 6 orders-of-magnitude increase in the storage moduli of the entangled aggregates compared with the liquid dispersions. Subsequent heating resulted in a 2-fold increase in both stiffness and yield stress. Controlled dissociation is induced by imparting kinetic energy to the individual ribbons at high magnetic field rotation speeds. Study results provide insights that can lead to advancements in control and task programming of such swarming systems, specifically, by designing mechanical and chemo-mechanical switches for system manipulation. Imparting dynamic collective behaviors into synthetic systems may enable a range of potential applications from autonomous bio-inspired soft robotics to injectable biomaterials.

About the speaker:

Dr. Asaf Dana is an assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln. His research focuses on developing soft stimuli-responsive material platforms for applications in tissue engineering, soft robotics and materials processing. Dr. Dana received his Ph.D. (2022) from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, focusing on the design of a previously unaccessed high-rate actuation mode of shape memory alloys. His research interests include the mechanics of responsive materials with emphasis on processes involving phase transitions in fabrication and actuation. In his research, he develops new experimental systems and methods to study the fundamental relations between microstructural evolution and macro-scale response and employs this knowledge for the development of new engineering design tools for smart and responsive systems.

Developers are invited to submit both free-to-play and commercial games completed or published in the past year for the "Award Showcase" category.

Upcoming Masterpiece games can be any tabletop or digital game that is currently in-progress, but might be playable by the in-person events. Incomplete games in this category must be submitted by Friday April 24th to confirm a spot to show their progress to attendees.

Awards Showcase Games can be submitted in three categories: Free Games, Commercial Tabletop Games, and Commercial Video Games.

Free Games can be either tabletop/board games or video games freely available online for anyone to download and play.Commercial Tabletop Games can be any standalone game available for purchase as a complete physical product or as a digital download. Expansions to, or modules for, wholly separate existing products will not be considered. Commercial Video Games can be any complete digital game available for purchase and download from any publicly accessible site or platform-specific store. Expansions to, or DLC made for, existing products will not be considered.Awards Showcase Games submitted will be played and judged by students, staff, and faculty of the Maverick Meadow Indie Game Studio. After a period of submission and judging, developers of submitted games and the general public are invited to UNO’s PKI building on Friday May 8th at 5pm for an awards and a showcase event in celebration of your hard work and contributions to the growth of the Nebraska independent game development scene.

Tips and Help:

Students, hobbyists, and professionals at any level are welcome to submit complete games to this expo.Games available through itch.io are easily accessible, and game pages are free to make. This talk explores what it means to commemorate genocide in a society still divided, asking who is allowed to shape collective memory versus challenge it. By focusing on post-1996 Bosnia and Herzegovina, Dr. Lana Obradovic will address who remembers, who resists those memories, and why places like Srebrenica remain central and contested in public history. The exhibition poses questions on reconciliation and how we might learn from history to build better futures.

About the Board of Regents

The Board of Regents—the governing body for the University of Nebraska—consists of eight voting members elected by district for six-year terms. The Board also includes four non-voting student Regents, one from each NU campus, that serve during their tenure as student body president. The Board provides strategic leadership to the University, promoting and advocating for the advancement of the University's mission of education, research and outreach. Among its many duties, the most important include selecting the President of the University and approving the budget and tuition rates.
