You are invited to bring your most precious items for digitization. The number of items that can be scanned may be limited due to number of registrations. Participants will receive a digital copy of their scanned materials while also donating a copy to the Museum. Archivists will be available to offer advice on storage and preservation for your personal archives.

Experience the wild after dark!

Night Life at Glacier Creek Preserve offers a chance to explore the fascinating world of animals that become active after sunset. Light traps and other methods used to attract moths, beetles, and other invertebrates will be set up at various locations around the Barn with bat nets set up nearby to allow for observation of this group of night-time animals. Individuals with special knowledge of the various night-time animals will move throughout the stations taking notes, sharing observations, and answering questions. Visitors are encouraged to move freely between the stations to observe the diversity of animals that are active at night and to ask questions about them.Animal specialists for the evening include Dr. Ted Burk (Creighton University), Loren and Babs Padelford, Dr. Jeremy White (UNO), Dr. Jody Green (UNL Extension) and Tracy Coleman (Glacier Creek Preserve, UNO).If you have them, headlamps or flashlights will be helpful should you wish to take a night hike along one of the Preserve’s mowed fire trails.Optional guided hikes related to bats, insects, and snakes will be provided beginning at 9:15 PM.The Barn will be open for walk throughs and restroom use. Insect repellent will be available on site.This relaxed, come-and-go event, is free and open to the public. No RSVP required.Questions? This has been shown to increase student grade performance a half-letter grade beyond reminder emails. UNO instructors can apply for the Grade Nudge Training Program, which will pay a stipend between $400 to $750 for less than three hours of work. Training sessions are open to all.

Space is limited in the training program, and all applications must be received by April 1. Earlier applications will receive higher consideration. All attendees must be registered.

Abstract:

This paper studies the effects of military spending shocks on labor market outcomes and time use across demographic groups defined by gender and marital status. Using a shift-share (Bartik) instrumental variable approach based on state-level variation in military spending exposure, we estimate the causal effects of fiscal shocks on employment, work hours, and labor force participation for married females, married males, single females, and single males. We find that military spending increases labor market activity for men and single women, while married women reduce their labor supply—a pattern consistent with intrahousehold specialization in response to positive income shocks. We complement the main results with time use data from the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) to characterize how household members reallocate time between market work and home production. The paper also develops two complementary tests of instrument validity tailored to shift-share designs: a pre-period balance test examining whether baseline exposure shares predict pre-sample labor market trends, and a forward-looking test of parallel trends that examines whether future realizations of the instrument predict current outcomes within the main sample.

Abstract:

This paper develops a theoretical model of how artificial intelligence (AI) affects the firm's labor demand decision on the intensive margin---specifically, the choice of hours worked per employee. We model AI as a new input that enters both the production function and the effective-hours technology. We find that worker hours increase with AI exposure if and only if the elasticity of AI's indirect impact on effective hours is greater than the elasticity of its direct impact. These theoretical results are tested with firm and household data from China.

Abstract:

Humans are prone to various biases when making decisions, including demographic biases like sexism and racism, and cognitive biases like framing effects, beauty effects, and information effects. We investigate how expertise affects the prevalence of these evaluation biases when assessing others. Unless demographic evaluation biases are extreme, they’re unlikely to be detected. Our idea is that as expertise increases, it reduces evaluation bias and decreases evaluation variance as the evaluator is less reliant on their biases. We use a behavioral lab with a financial literacy knowledge treatment midway through the experiment to change the level of expertise.

Abstract:

Many economic forces have led to the creation of the dominant digital platforms, including Google, Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, and Apple (GAMMA). These have created challenges for regulating big tech, considering the economic, political, and social factors involved. In the economic sphere, the reinforcing effects of networks and big data give GAMMA an advantage over new entrants and smaller players. The rise of these players has coincided with a period of decline in US antitrust enforcement and regulation, beginning in the 1980s, though it has occasionally been interrupted by brief moments of resurgence. Other policy issues related to digital platforms have grown in economic and social importance in recent years, such as artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency, and online gambling. Together with social media, they are rapidly transforming America and the world.

2027 Honorees to be announced in February!

The event began in 1988 and is named for the first female department chair on the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s campus—then known as Omaha University. Dr. Hollie Bethel served as the Department Chair of Elementary Education from 1951 to 1975 and had a profound effect for future educators and fellow peers. Since its inception, over 200 alumni have been honored.
